The Pictorial Postmark ties Babe Ruth and Roger Maris stamps from the Celebrate the Century series. Both Aaron and Maris received hate mail and death threats as they approached Ruth's home run records. (Sad, isn't it?) larger illustration (new window)...$6.00 |

Dgn 851: Sc. 5957 Allen Toussaint 5½"x8½" Dragon Card showing him in front of an open grand piano. Eight additional stamps show other jazz pianists. The Digital Color Postmark and Pictorial Postmark tie all 9 stamps. larger illustration (new window)...$20.00 |
The other stamps are Sc. 3096 Count Basie, 2211 Duke Ellington, 2986 Jelly Roll Morton, 2988 Eubie Blake, Toussaint, 2990 Thelonious Monk, 2985 James P. Johnson, 4807 Ray Charles, and 2992 Erroll Garner.
And here's a secret about the combo: There's an 80% B&W image of each stamp below each one, to help with placement. Except at the last minute, I decided to replace the Marvin Gaye stamp with Ray Charles, because he was more "jazz" than Gaye.
Dgn 854: Sc. Betty White 5"x7" Dragon Card with a picture of White in 1954 with a television camera on the set of "The Betty White Show." There is a small printed photo of tap dancer/singer Arthur Duncan, a regular on her show. The text tells the story: Pressured by Southern TV stations to dismiss Duncan, she refused. Her show was canceled at the end of the year. The Pictorial Postmark ties the new stamp and Sc. 3187f School Desegregation Supreme Court ruling — handed down the same year as this incident. larger illustration (new window)...$4.00 |
