First Day Cover Sc. 4981 Civil War - Surrender on a 5”x7” Dragon Card reproducing a Currier
& Ives print depicting the surrender of Confederate Gen. Joseph E.
Johnston to Union Gen. William T. Sherman, April 26th, 1865. The print
is from about 1865 and was hand-colored. Although ordered to continue
to fight a guerrilla war, Johnston felt it would result in pointless
bloodshed. His was the last major Confederate army to surrender. The
Appomattox pictorial postmark ties the Appomattox stamp, and 1995’s
Johnston (Sc. 2975m) and Sherman (2975q) stamps. Great for a Civil
War- or military-on-stamps collection! |
